I went to a Bills game and this happened
It has been way too long since our team has been good. The last time we made the playoffs was in 1999. It has been even longer since they have even won a playoff game. You know the story…everything that could possibly go wrong for an NFL team has gone wrong for the Bills since then. We fans have seen it all.
Then I went to the Bills game yesterday and this happened.

And here is the entire winning drive.[audio:http://indabuff.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/bills-panthers.mp3]
As the Bills offense took the field with a 1:38 left in the game, a lot people were already starting to hit the exits. I was a little surprised by that. Then again, maybe I shouldn’t have been.
Though I have no illusions about the Buffalo Bills being great this year, the eternal Bills optimist in me feels they are turning the corner. I just want that feeling back I had in the late 80s and well into the 90s. I want the Bills to make me want to shout again. Yesterday they did.
Speaking of the game, this is gross
Not everyone does this, but I was surprised again at how people leave their trash in the lots around Ralph Wilson Stadium after the game is over. This isn’t something new. It has been going on for as long as I can remember. It is gross. It is wrong.
The (UB) New York Bulls
If the University at Buffalo (UB) wants to re-brand their athletics program, they should consider getting rid of the whole New York Bulls initiative and start putting teams teams on the field or court in their big sports that actually win consistently. No amount of branding or re-branding is going to change the perception of the program locally, regionally or nationally without that.
Changing the emphasis to New York instead of Buffalo is also a kind of a knock on the city where UB is are located. If you want to re-brand athletics, the place you need to start is here with the people of Western New York, its students and alumni. Why not start putting more football and basketball games on TV, why not lower ticket prices for a few years for premium sports and why not intensify marketing/branding locally?
How is UB going to sell the Bulls to the rest of the world when they can’t even sell it here?
It was nice to hear RJ on the radio last night as the Sabres kicked off the preseason with a win in Montreal. I was going to post the highlights, but I couldn’t find them anywhere online today.
With the end in sight for him calling the games, I am going to try to savor every last drop of RJ I can over the next few years. You just know he has a few gems left to call.
I have this theory that he is stretching out his time to retirement to hopefully give himself another shot at Stanley Cup run by the Sabres.
Since the Sabres or WGR didn’t post highlights, I will treat you to this. It still send shivers up my blue & gold spine.
One last Bills and football comment
Just like the 24/7 news world we live now, we have a 24/7 world for sports news and info. It is too much. With everything available for the NFL or the Bills at our fingertips, all aspects of the game are analyzed, re-analyzed and over analyzed. It is like a wall of white noise. Don’t get me wrong…I love having access to sports news, info and data when I want it. It just that I sometimes miss the days when I looked forward to get the stats in the paper on Wednesday or you had to wait for the sports radio shows to come on at night to hear more about the game or team during the week. It made following the Bills an entirely different experience than what we have now.
