On February 23, 1945, during the battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines raised a flag atop Mount Suribachi. Here is color footage of the raising taken by Sgt. Bill Genaust. Genaust was killed in action a week and a half later.
Video footage like this is remarkable. It always leaves me with a sense of awe of Americans during World War two and the sacrifices the Greatest Generation made.
