Esmonde on Facebook…Me on Facebook

I do consider myself a moderate user of Twitter and Facebook…I also find myself wondering where people find the time to participate in social media in what seems to be an all day affair for some.
The beauty of Facebook, etc. is that it has allowed me to reconnect with people I had lost contact with, stay connected with friends and family better, promote causes I believe in and connect with people or groups I have wanted to get to know more.
The danger of Facebook, etc. is what Donn Esmonde writes at the end of his column today in the Buffalo News:
Technology is a wonderful thing, when it works for you. There is no turning back from Facebook, and whatever comes next. I just hope there are not people who wake up one day, and realize they have been Twittering their lives away.
Surely there are…but my guess is that there are people who won’t realize it.
Striking a balance between what you do online and offline in terms of how it affects your life is going to be a growing struggle for a lot of people…me included.
Don’t get me wrong…I like Facebook, Twitter, blogging, text messaging, instant messaging, etc…but I think at times it gets to be a bit much…there are people who basically live their whole life via such things…you know who I am talking about…the people who seem to be always connected via social media applications…it makes me wonder what is being subtracted from their lives because they are living their life to be connected?!?!?!?
People need to pay attention to the balance.

I like Facebook for all the reasons you’ve mentioned, although being too cheap to use my cell phone for internet access greatly lessens time spent on this stuff.
Personally I can’t understand those who pay real money to enhance their pretend farms etc. on Facebook. Real money!
